Comedian Jimmy Carr has admitted his father is “dead” to him – and hasn’t had any contact with him for 21 years.
Speaking on the Parenting Hell podcast, Jimmy explained that his mother died in 2001 and he lost contact with his father around the same time.
He has previously said that he ‘lost’ his parents at the same time but was lucky to have “enough father figures and mother figures in [his] life.”
“It’s not a secret. I haven’t seen my dad in 21 years and you know the line, ‘My mother’s dead and my father’s dead to me’, which sounds very cold until you meet the guy,” he explained on the podcast.
He continued to speak about the decades of estrangement from his Irish father: “It’s a weird thing where I’m acutely aware that things don’t always work out… I’m aware that sometimes it goes the other way and that could be terrible and there’s no bitterness and there’s no anger there.”
The comedian said that he doesn’t plan on rekindling the relationship anytime soon: “I want the best, I just can’t have that guy in my life.
“There’s a bit of sadness there and you worry, ‘Could something go wrong with my kid?’ You want to prevent that, but it’s hard”, he added.
“I think it’s about being a father and being that figure for him but not in any way controlling.”
49-year-old Jimmy has a son, Rockefeller, with his wife Karoline Copping – although the pair never made the birth public and it is believed their son is around two years old.
He originally announced the news during a stand-up comedy gig at the O2 Academy Brixton.
Jimmy said: “We’re going to have a gender reveal party for our kid but we’re going to wait until he’s 21 just to be sure. With some babies you can’t tell, is it a boy or an ugly girl?”
The comedian also opened up to Radio X host Chris Moyles on Monday morning about how fatherhood has changed him immeasurably, but how he feared the worst for his career.
Chris asked if the experience had been “proper life-changing”.
Jimmy replied: “Proper life changing but then again, I did gigs the other week so I’m refreshing the tour, and I just like writing new jokes for the tour.”
His wife Karoline is a commissioning editor for Channel 5 and the couple began dating in 2001 after Jimmy auditioned for a panel show she was working on.
She has since been credited for Jimmy Carr Live and Jimmy Carr: In Concert – although Jimmy doesn’t think he made a good first impression on his future wife.
During an appearance on Desert Island Discs, the comic said he saw her notes and she had written that he was a “one-note comedian with the eyes of a sex offender”.
