BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker was left blushing on Tuesday morning, as he was firmly shut down by his co-host Sally Nugent.
The pair were sitting on the red sofa with sports correspondent John Watson to discuss the sporting news of the day – and an attempt to speak French soon had Sally declaring she has “given up” on him.
Dan began the discussion by telling his co-hosts: “I did learn something significant from the Ballon D’or last night. Didier Drogba was on stage with Lionel Messi, and at the end Messi had to press the buzzer to light up the Eiffel Tower.
“And I learnt that the French for ‘press the buzzer’ is ‘pressez le buzzer’!”
John couldn’t help but scoff at the theory, as he said: “No! Never!”
Dan insisted: “Yes! Honestly, watch it back. Didier Drogba gives a lovely speech in French, and he points to the thing with Lionel Messi and says, ‘pressez le buzzer’.”
“Well, we all learn something on this programme,” John allowed as the trio collapsed into giggles.
But Sally simply wasn’t having any of it, as she spluttered: “It sounds like something Del Boy would say! It does, doesn’t it?”
Joining in, Dan joked along: “Bonnet de douche, Rodney, bonnet de douche!”
John insisted you have to “think on your feet” when it comes to translation, as Dan agreed: “Mangetout, John, mangetout.”
“Oh, it’s very good,” Sally said dryly, as she continued: “I give up on the pair of you – I really do!”
And the conversation quickly moved on from there – before Dan could shed any more light on his French speaking skills.
It comes just a day after Dan shut down Strictly Come Dancing fans who were fuming at him making it to the quarter-finals despite consistently low scores.
Speaking of the persistent ‘fix’ rumours surrounding the BBC dancing programme, Dan explained: “Listen, I’m just having a lovely time. I don’t get the fix stuff, I’m just very thankful for all the support and the people who keep voting. And we’re just enjoying dancing, that’s basically it.
“I know stuff like that gets written based on three or four comments or tweets, and it’s lovely that people care about the programme. But then I genuinely get thousands of messages every day from people who are enjoying it and having a nice time,” he explained.
But it came as Dan started to discuss his emotional tribute to Gary Speed last week, breaking down in tears as he addressed the death of the Premier League star who died 10 years ago.
“What really… I wouldn’t say annoyed me, but disappointed me over the weekend…” Dan explained. “Some people actually accused me of even using Gary Speed’s tribute last week to try and gain support for Strictly.”
Clearly furious, Dan said: “Listen, I know people enjoy the show, but don’t be daft. There’s a line, and I think stuff like that crosses that line.”
BBC Breakfast airs from 6am every day on BBC One.
