Dan Walker was mortified when he accidentally described actress Maxine Peake as “horrible” in their live interview on BBC Breakfast.
During Tuesday’s instalment of the popular BBC morning show, the 44-year-old introduced the Anne star as “ruthless” and “horrible” before he reassured viewers he was talking only about her character in her new gritty drama series.
The award-winning actress is set to take on a new four-part series titled Rules of the Game which follows the impact of the #MeToo movement in the workforce.
But as they welcomed her on the show, the blonde bombshell was seen wiping tears from her face following his insults on air.
The horrified presenter was quick to apologise for the mistake as he gushed over the actress before quickly moving on to her hew role in the BBC drama.
He quickly put his foot in his mouth as he introduced the show, saying: “Now the actor Maxine Peake is no stranger to a gritty TV thriller and the latest sees her take on the role of a ruthless manager.”
As he turns to his co-host Nina Warhust, he adds: “She’s horrible isn’t she?” before he explains: ” Not in real life – in this programme.”
As she giggles beside him, he quickly moves on to the next part of the segment in an effort to brush past his awkward TV blunder.
He continued: “She’s in charge of a toxic workplace culture.”
While he nervously shifts in his seat, Nina interjects with: “Rules of the Game is inspired by the hashtag Me Too movement and it tackles the issues of sexual politics in the office after a young female employee is found dead. Let’s have a look.
After viewers watched a snippet of the BBC drama, Dan and Nina welcomed the actress onto the show as she playfully wiped tears from her eyes.
Nina opens with: “Maxine Peake joins us now – good morning.”
But Maxine wasn’t ready to let the awkward moment pass as she joked: “I’m just wiping my tears away Dan.”
The Strictly star quickly apologised for his mistake as he gushed: “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to say that you are horrible I was talking about your character!
“Now, be honest, this character that you play Maxine, she’s not the nicest is she?” he asked as the trio giggled at his awkward mistake.
Luckily the star didn’t take the passing comment to heart as she happily forgave the TV presenter and continued with the interview.
