Spotify and Netflix have plans for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to create different content than the couple envisaged, a royal commentator has claimed.
Meghan and Harry signed up to lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify after quitting as working members of the Royal Family in early 2020.
On their Archewell website, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex outline plans for projects including a docu-series on the Invictus Games as well as an animated series.
However, despite also announcing a podcast series, fans have only been treated to one episode released in Christmas 2020, and Spotify and Netflix have both now advertised for producers to help Meghan and Harry produce content.
This has led one commentator to claim that Spotify had “taken matters into its own hands”.
Royal expert Neil Sean has delved into what these plans might look like, suggesting that the streaming giants want to emphasise the pair’s celebrity status.
“They’ve had all this hoo-hah, all this publicity, and it’s good for them. Let’s face it, Harry and Meghan are good for business because it gets their brand mentioned worldwide on TV shows, in newspapers and online,” he began, speaking on his YouTube channel.
But, after claims from another royal commentator that the couple’s partners were not keen on their ideas for “worthy” content, Neil suggested that the platforms wanted more focus on Harry and Meghan’s royal lives.
He continued: “One of the battles they are having, allegedly, is that they want to do more lighter, frothier content.
“In this day and age we need fun… So guess what, the people at Spotify and more importantly also Netflix like the idea of Harry and Meghan being a celebrity couple.
“So some of the ideas that you may see would be recollections of Harry and Meghan talking about how their front cover of Time magazine came about.
“They’d like the ex-royals to give some insight into their ex-royal life.”
Neil speculated that this might include coverage of the Susssexes’ trip to New York in September 2021, or to delve behind the scenes on Meghan’s 40×40 initiative that was announced to mark her birthday last year.
“Apparently this is the sort of content that Netflix and Spotify would work quite fun (sic). We would be intrigued. It’s a bit like Kardashians with, of course, crowns,” he added.
“I’m not quite sure how this has gone down because obviously this wasn’t the route that the ex-royals thought they were going to go down to try and move their lives, and more importantly their brand forward.
“But when you don’t have a say and you basically have to do what the people are paying you to do, then of course you’re going to have to open up a little.
“Either way for the time being, it looks like Spotify and Netflix have got a grip on things.”
