James Corden has bravely dared to mock Jada Pinkett Smith just days after her husband Will Smith slapped host Chris Rock for laughing at her bald head.
During the ceremony, which is televised globally, comedian Rock made a dig at Jada’s buzz cut, comparing the 50-year-old actress to GI Jane.
Initially, Will laughed but moments later stormed the stage to give Rock a smack across the chops and said: ”Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth!”
The incident has shocked the world with many calling for Smith, 53, to lose his best actor gong, which he won not long after on the same night.
Just days later James Corden has made light of the event in a musical skit on his show. The 43-year-old performed an amusing take on the film Encanto and debated how to handle Sunday’s shocking incident delicately.
“James, we have to at least acknowledge [what happened],”one producer said, before James chimed in with: ”We don’t talk about Jada, no, no, no,” he sang, parodying the tune We Don’t Talk About Bruno from the Lin-Manuel Miranda’s which won the Oscar for Best Animated Film.
However viewers were not too impressed with the funnyman’s antics.
One wrote on Twitter: “James Corden making the worst jokes that you will ever hear.”
Another added: “This is genius because James Corden instantly killed Encanto and Will Smith Oscar memes. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone.”
One other posted: ”Had we stopped mocking Black women for too long for your comfort?”
Another chimed in by saying it was “literally impossible” to find someone as “unfunny” as Corden was.
Meanwhile Chris Rock performed his latest show to a standing ovation following his the slap. However, the Dogma star told the audience he would not be discussing or joking about the slap as he was “still processing it”.
Audience members were also banned from taking their phones into the venue and one was even reportedly ejected for calling out “Will Smith” during the show.
The Academy has confirmed that it had initiated “disciplinary proceedings” against Smith for violating its Standards of Conduct, “including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour, and compromising the integrity of the Academy”.
