BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent apologises as Jon Kay admits he 'nearly fell asleep' on air

BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent was forced to apologise on-air after her co-presenter Jon Kay admitted he almost fell asleep while presenting alongside her.

The pair were presenting the morning programme on Tuesday (April 12), and discussing a recent disabled dog walk which saw all breeds and varieties of dogs with disabilities gather together.

And appearing on the show was Pumpkin, a paralysed pooch who uses a wheelchair to get around.

But Jon was quick to establish that he had no idea Pumpkin and her owner Tammy were set to appear on the show, explaining: “I didn’t realise you were coming in this morning, and I saw you and Pumpkin going across the piazza there in front of the studios yesterday evening, and I saw her walking across.”

It didn’t take long, however, for the sweet pup to fall asleep in her mum’s arms, exhausted from the experience of being on the telly.

In between gushing over how adorable Pumpkin was, Sally said: “She’s just so relaxed, it’s so cute! I think that’s the first time anyone has fallen asleep on the sofa!”

But Jon jumped in to correct her, as he interjected: “I don’t know, I was close at about five past six this morning, Sal.”

A giggling Sally replied: “Sorry about that!”

Tammy explained: “Normally she’s very vocal!”

But Sally reassured her: “She’s just very relaxed. She’s a natural, that’s what it is!”

Jon couldn’t help wondering if Pumpkin’s wheelchair is specially made for her, as Tammy explained: “This one isn’t, this one is one that we bought from a company called Walking Pets.

“However, when she was so tiny, we couldn’t get a wheelchair for her. Winston’s Wheels, which is one of the charities that we’re helping with the disability dog walk, they contacted me and provided the tiniest little wheelchair you could imagine.”

The walk proved a success – and Tammy already has her eye set on another event, after setting up her own registered charity called Pumpkin and Friends.

“That is to raise more awareness of dogs with disabilities, and help families financially with large vet bills etcetera,” she said – while adding that Pumpkin is going to become a therapy dog.

Later on in the programme, Jon found himself in hot water with weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, who told him off about his dirty car.

Jon explained that Carol was “trying to time the cleaning of her car” to coincide with the rain.

Carol said: “After seeing your Twitter account with what’s on your car, Jon, I think you’re going to join me!”

Jon had shared a revolting picture of his car roof covered in bird excrement – leaving his followers disgusted.

After presenting the meteorological segment, in which she reported high temperatures of 20 degrees, Jon said: “My car needs more than that, Carol.”

Giggling, Carol fired back: “Your car needs a good hose, is what it needs!”

“A high pressure hose, at that!” Jon said, as Sally said: “Urgh.”

“Yeah, it’s bad. Really bad,” Jon told her.
