Snubbed ITV extra spills on set secrets from outfit ban, 11-hour days and odd liquid

Two former soap extras have spilled behind-the-scenes secrets from their time on ITVs biggest soaps and revealed what really goes into filming an episode of the hit shows.

Extras Matthew Davidge and Chloe Bernard have spoken out on their long days of filming and even revealed how you can star in up to three episodes in one day.

Corrie extra Matthew Davidge was recently sacked after 35 years after grabbing a selfie with GMB’s Andi Peters, while Chloe Bernard was in Hollyoaks multiple times while studying drama at university.

A Corrie spokesperson said of Davidge’s departure: “A walk-on artist was seen breaching filming protocols and his agent was notified.

“They decided on a course of action. While Corrie’s episodes are just 30 minutes long, and scenes usually around two minutes long, Bolton FM radio show host Matthew tells us how he could be waiting around for 11 hours some days when he filmed the ITV soap.

“I was quite lucky on my last shift,” he told The Sun. “I was there from eight o’clock and had finished two hours later – and that was for three different episodes.

“But sometimes you can be there until seven o’clock at night!”

Chloe, 30, had a similar experience with long hours when she was working on Hollyoaks, explaining that you arrive at 8am, and sit around waiting to hear if they’ll need you or not.

“Sometimes you could be waiting for a few hours, sometimes all day. It was really just dependent on what scenes they were filming.”

Matthew revealed he was paid £150 on his last shift, as he was filmed for three episodes, but it’s between £90 and £100 for one episode – although the agency takes a cut, so it ends up being “about 70 quid”.

Another scene that Chloe had to film was one in the opening credits of Hollyoaks, in which she picks up a glass of wine from behind the bar that contained a mystery liquid.

“I don’t have a clue what it was, but it wasn’t wine,” she laughs. “I don’t know if it was poisoned but you couldn’t drink it.”

They added that they even had to bring their own clothes.

“You just can’t wear anything that’s going to upstage the main cast – so no sequin jumpsuits,” laughs Chloe.

However, Matthew has been asked to wear certain costumes including when he played a playing a prisoner during the prison riots, while David Platt was in jail.
