Eurovision 2021 winners Måneskin made a rather candid reference to the drug controversy they were embroiled in last year and told finalists not to get “too close to the table”.
Last year, lead vocalist Damiano David was accused of snorting cocaine during the live finals after fans online thought he did something rather suspicious while close to a table.
After a thorough investigation and almost being stripped of their winning title, Damiano was proven innocent – however, he was clearly scarred from the ordeal.
During the 2022 finals however, when asked what advice he would give finalists, Damiano joked: “Two [bits of] advice, have fun and don’t get close to the table guys.”
Sharing their frank honesty, fans in the audience roared with laughter.
Sharing their thoughts on social media, fans took to Twitter to comment on the joke.
One person penned: “When Damiano said have fun and stay away from the table, poor guy had to make songs about not taking drugs.”
Another shared: “I just knew damiano was gonna say something about the drug allegations I love him.”
While a third added: “Damiano, my love, joking about how everyone accused him of consuming and drugs bc he got ‘too close to the table’ in Eurovision 2021 and now he came back with that advice lol slay king.”
After the drugs rumours circulated, in 2021 the European Broadcasting Union said it was “alarmed that inaccurate speculation leading to fake news has overshadowed the spirit and the outcome of the event and unfairly affected the band”.
They added: “We wish to congratulate Måneskin once again and wish them huge success.
“We look forward to working with our Italian member Rai on producing a spectacular Eurovision Song Contest in Italy next year.”
Reacting to the allegations, the band also took to Instagram to say: “We really are AGAINST drugs and we never used cocaine. “We are ready to get tasted [tested], cause we have nothing to hide.”
While Damiano said: “I don’t use drugs. Please, guys. Don’t say that really, no cocaine.”
