Though Dan Walker’s transition into life at Channel 5 seems to have gone smoothly, there has allegedly been some “disruption” behind the scenes at his old BBC Breakfast job.
One BBC source has now confirmed to Daily Star that things are rather hectic behind-the-scenes of the morning programme, which is currently helmed by Sally Nugent, Jon Kay, Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt.
Not only is there tension on set due to the “hasty” decision by BBC bosses to replace Dan’s image with Jon Kay’s for the show’s official social media accounts, but a major overhaul is being planned at the same time.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, a BBC source said: “There’s disruption behind the scenes as BBC Breakfast is getting a new set in the next few months.”
The show is set to emulate the studio of popular US talk shows, with a more dynamic background and perhaps swapping out the low coffee table for a higher desk.
They added: “It will be the first time they’ve changed it since they moved to Salford in 2012, so all in all everything will look very different in the coming months.
“Apparently they want it to look a bit more like a US breakfast show and might have windows and people walking past.”
But that isn’t all, as there is more tension than just a set reshuffle behind the cameras.
In front of the camera, Jon Kay has stepped almost seamlessly into Dan’s old seat on the red sofa – but not everyone is happy about it.
The BBC hasn’t yet confirmed who will take over Dan’s role in an official capacity, and some staff still vying for the promotion have been left feeling “awkward” that Jon appears to be the “heir apparent”.
Our source told us: “Much as everyone thinks Jon Kay is the heir apparent for Dan’s job, there has been some uneasiness that the ‘header’ picture for the official BBC Breakfast Twitter account has been changed in the last few days (while the process is still ongoing) to include Jon as one of the four main stars.
“It’s perhaps fair enough as he has been part of the ‘family’ for months, but some of those within the BBC are still vying for the job and feel it’s now already been decided.”
They added: “Some of those candidates also wonder if the show bosses could have waited a few more weeks before doing it.
“There is a bit of awkwardness that the bosses have put Jon in this situation. He is well-liked but there’s a feeling they’ve been a bit hasty and now it looks like a done deal before the process has even got going.”
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
