Scooby-Doo character Velma Dinkley has been portrayed as a lesbian on screen after years of speculation.
The new animated Scooby-Doo movie Trick or Treat was released on Tuesday and sees the geeky science expert get her first love interest.
Velma is seen going weak at the knees when she meets Coco for the first time in the flick, with fans of the animation absolutely delighted at the scenes.

The film is the first time Velma has officially been portrayed as a lesbian on-screen since the 1969 creation of the cartoon series.
While the Mystery Inc genius and her sexual orientation has often been a topic of discussion with both fans and creators of the varying movies, her liking for other women has always failed to make it into the final production until now.
He tweeted in 2020: “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
Meanwhile, Mystery Incorporated series creator Tony Cervone also addressed the character’s sexuality.
During Pride Month in 2020 he posted on Instagram: “I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why.
“There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago.
“I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post reset, they are a couple. You can not like it, but this was our intention.”
Actress Hayley Kiyoko – who played Velma in the 2009 film – has also celebrated the news. She said: “I remember booking Velma in 2008. It was my first big role in a movie. I also remember thinking ‘I wonder if they know they hired a lesbian as Velma’ here we are, 14 years later……love you all so much.”
