Dan Walker makes kids sign contracts before being allowed mobile phones

Dan Walker has opened up about how “strict” he and his wife are about their children’s mobile phone usage.

The former BBC Breakfast presenter said that his three kids have their own devices – but with stringent conditions.

All three have to sign a contract after sitting down and discussing responsible usage and “the things we expect from them in terms of what they do with it and how they use it”.

The contract allows both Dan and his wife Sarah to regularly check the kids’ phones.

Dan is dad to Susanna, 15, Jessica, 13, and 11-year-old Joe.

Among the other rules are no phones in bedrooms at night and limited access to social media apps.

Dan, 45, told The Times: “I routinely have a look at the children’s phones. Personally, my wife and I try to be really open with our kids.”

They are not allowed to have age-restricted apps such as Instagram, either, and if they breach their contract, the phones are removed.

Dan said that rules stem from “serious concern” about online bullying and the relentless pressure youngsters are under due to social media.

The former Strictly star said: “Issues like bullying don’t stop at the school gates.

“It can be a non-stop, 24-hours-a-day drip-drip build-up of pressure.

“There can be no release and no let-up.”

Dan’s new book, Standing on Shoulders: Incredible Heroes and How They Inspire Us, explores the issue and includes interviews with three dads who lost a daughter to suicide.

He added: “We need to be more open in what we discuss with our kids.”

Meanwhile, reports are rife that the TV presenter will go digging for treasure with Michaela Strachan and Raksha Dave in Channel 5’s brand-new series, Digging For Treasure.

Back in May, Dan left the BBC after 13 years when he signed a new deal with the rival media company.
