The broadcaster updated fans with an unfortunate development minutes later, revealing a lift engineer had been waylaid by traffic on his way to rescue the star.

Ben added: “Good news: a lift engineer is on the way.

“Bad news: he’s stuck in traffic and will be another hour.”

Further into the evening, Ben shared a positive update with fans and confirmed he had been freed from the elevator.

He wrote: “BREAKING NEWS: I’m free!

“Almost three hours of incarceration but thanks to all for your concern (and bad jokes).”

The dad-of-three also later apologised to Radio 1 DJ Greg James for saying the station had been “driving him mad” inside the elevator, adding: “Sorry Greg, didn’t mean to slag off Radio One, but three hours of forced listening to any radio station is hard to take!

“Obviously if it had been your show, my incarceration would have been more pleasurable.”

The incident isn’t the first time Ben has struggled at work as in December 2020, the broadcaster was caught yawning live on-air.

In an apology, he later said: “Apologies for this dear viewers – I was at the end of a long shift after a 5am start when the director cut to me by mistake.

“The perils of live TV!”
