BBC Happy Valley fans 'work out' heartbreaking reason why Poppy won't ever take off coat

BBC Happy Valley viewers have noticed that abusive PE teacher Rob Hepworth’s daughter Poppy won’t ever take her coat off while in the house.

In the dramatic new series, which saw the show return after seven years off screen, one of the sub-plots revolves around Ryan Cawood’s abusive teacher Rob Hepworth.

After he was introduced as a teacher picking on Ryan, viewers soon realised he was abusive to his wife, keeping locks on the drugs and even reporting his wife to the police.

And whilst it seems Rob does attempt to hide his abuse from his kids, the two little girls have picked up on it and are worried for their mother.

In one of the latest episodes, which saw Rob find his wife’s corpse in a suitcase in the garage, he could be seen telling Poppy to once again “take off her coat” as they headed into the house.

Fans think that Poppy is terrified of her father and uses the coat as a source of comfort while being forced to listen to her mother scream and cry behind closed doors.

Taking to social media to share their theories, one fan said: “It’s just trauma and her way of coping. A safety blanket.

“She’s terrified. A psychologist on the police force will hopefully spot it put it together and they get a picture of what’s been happening in that household.”

Another agreed: “Presumably something to do with her living in a traumatising household, like looking emaciated without it, possible bruises (albeit the Dad hasn’t been shown being aggressive towards his children so far).

“But I agree there’s got to be a bit of a twist coming on that one. They haven’t referenced it this many times for it to not have a bigger part to play later on.”

A third chipped in: “I’m sure I’ve heard/read about people from abusive households keeping shoes/coats on as a trauma response so they’re always ready to leave if they need to, it’s probably some sort of comfort to her, I do hope they explain it by the end of the series though!”
