BBC Radio host Ken Bruce has announced his departure date from his long-running weekday mid-morning show with a scathing message about his former employer.
The popular presenter will step down earlier than planned next Friday, March 3, with Vernon Kay stepping in to replace him the following week.
Ken made the announcement on Twitter just hours after it was confirmed that TV host Vernon, 48, will be taking over the sought-after BBC Radio 2 slot.

He wrote: “I will be presenting my last show on Radio 2 next Friday. I had intended fulfilling my contract until the end of March but the BBC has decided it wants me to leave earlier. Let’s enjoy the week ahead!”
Ken originally confirmed he would be leaving last month after 31 years at the broadcaster saying it was “time for a change”.
Confirming the epic career move Vernon – who has previously hosted his own show on Radio 1 and filled in on Radio 2 – admitted his excitement and called the opportunity “a dream come true.”
He said: “I’m absolutely over the moon to be handed the microphone to present the mid-morning show on Radio 2, and what an honour to follow in the footsteps of the mighty Ken Bruce.
“I look forward to playing some of the best music in the world whilst in the company of the Radio 2 listeners, who I feel I’ve got to know over the last 18 months.
“It’s a dream come true to join the Radio 2 family and I can’t wait to start.”
Meanwhile, listeners have welcomed the news of Vernon stepping into the role as they excitedly praised his presenting skills on Twitter.
One wrote: “Vernon Kay to replace Ken Bruce? @RealKenBruce You’ve been a phenomenal top-class long-term tenure @BBCRadio2, a living legend, who will be hugely missed. If true, Vernon, this top job is perfect for you! You’ve been a brilliant stand-in. It’s great news.”
A second added: “Vernon Kay should be a good replacement for Ken Bruce. He’s very likeable.”
A third said: “Excellent news, he’ll do a cracking job.”
