However, it appears that Tony is at the epicentre of his own mystery outside work.

Viewers watched him sneak away from the office early, take secret phone calls and meet up with a blonde lady at a hotel towards the end of the episode.

As fans rack their brains on who the newcomer could be, actor Daniel teased: “He’s up to something. He’s leaving work a little bit quicker than he normally would.

“He’s meeting somebody and there’s a bit of lead in his pencil.

“He’s doing that thing that he’d tell others not to do which is keep home life and work life separate and again he’s never been able to do that very well.”

He continued: “It’s a cocktail which doesn’t mix entirely well for him.

“He’s up to something with somebody and I’m excited to hear if people start to think who it may be or who he has met.

“The one clue is that it’s somebody from a previous series so that’s all I’m going to drop in there..”

“The Bay is not just a cop show but there’s also social comment in there and talk of the tough stuff everybody is having to live through.

“It’s a very harsh world out there and Darragh is not afraid to bring that to the show.

Daniel Ryan has played Manning in all four series

“On social media, there’s a ‘Will Tony ever smile?’ And ‘Will Tony ever find love?’.

“I think Darragh [Carville, co-creator] has always had a long term plan for the storyline should we continue as we have.”

From the very first season, it was clear Tony was having marital problems as he often slept on the sofa in his office.

Their issues came to a head though when his wife Kerrie Manning (Ellen Manning) asked for a divorce in season two.

Manning’s team are also suspicious of his behaviour

It then came out that she had “shacked up” with one of Tony’s best friend.

But it isn’t just the viewers who have noticed him dash off to somewhere unknown.

Co-star Marsha Thomason, who plays DS Jenn Townsend, pointed out that this change of behaviour is noticeable to the rest of the team as well.

“You see some banter and they’re all observing Manning and are collectively suspicious of him and we’re a bit of a gang in regards to that.

“He’s the boss and we’re his subordinates and having a few giggles and it’s nice.”

Fans will have to wait and see who the mystery women is exactly.
