Su Pollard says Ruth Madoc’s ghost played prank on her after star’s tragic death

Hi-De-Hi! star Su Pollard claims Ruth Madoc’s ghost played a prank on her during an emotional onstage tribute.

The actress, 73, was starring as a fairy in panto last December when she learned her former co-star had died at the age of 79.

She spoke to the audience remembering Ruth – and was shocked when her crown was suddenly knocked from her head.

She said: “I made a little speech at the end. As I said, ‘Thank you so much, she would’ve been delighted with the tributes’, my crown went forward on my head.

“I said, ‘Ruth is watching us. She’s not quite ready to settle into heaven yet’. The audience applauded – it was fabulous.”

The actresses first met as co-stars in the legendary 80s sitcom, set in the fictional Maplins holiday camp in Crimpton-on-Sea.

Su and Ruth were best friends for 40 years, meaning she was devastated to find out the news of Ruth’s passing.

She told the Daily Star Sunday: “It was ever such a shock. It was terrible. I was about to do panto and I got a phone call to say Ruth had broken her leg.

“I found out what hospital she was in and I phoned her. And then a few days later she was gone.

“It was tragic, but it made me think about life. I thought, ‘OK girl, I’m going to live for you’. The thing is, I’m 73. Hopefully, I’ll live a long, long time. But by the law of averages, I could be, sadly, not with us in 10 years’ time.

“So you have to really enjoy what’s to come and embrace everything. Because you just never know.” Su wants to keep taking on experiences that come her way.

She added: “You’ve got to grab opportunities. It’s no good being fearful. Give something a go if you think you can do it.”

“I don’t mind doing anything so long as it’s fun. Today won’t come again, so enjoy it.”
