Comedian Harry Hill admits TV Burp jokes were ‘quite harsh’ and ‘did go a bit far’

Harry Hill has admitted that some of his jokes on the early noughties show ‘ TV Burp’ were too cruel.

The comedian pulled in big ratings for ITV when he poked fun at celebs on the series between 2001 and 2012.

The television show was chock-full of wacky segments, reviewing the best, worst, and weirdest of the week’s top programmes.

But the Surrey native now worries he went too far with some gags.

The 58-year-old said: “We always used to say it was a celebration.

“But the truth is, if you look at it, some of it was quite harsh.

“I think we did go a bit far. After a while, Jamie Oliver didn’t let us use any clips of his shows.”

Harry insists there’s no chance of the show being revived for a new series, despite fans clamouring for more.

The TV personality commented, “I get asked to bring it back at least once a day. If you go on social media, I get comments asking for it to come back.”

Yet, Hill explains that producers haven’t come knocking, which is why the show remains six feet under.

“That would have to be the first step,” the You’ve Been Framed host explained, “and ITV hasn’t done that.

“When I said I wanted to finish the show in 2012, they didn’t try to persuade me to keep doing it.

“I had a good relationship with them and they knew I was fed up with doing it.”

Harry says that no producers have reached out to him about reviving TV Burp

Taking a brief detour from TV, Hill has had his hands full recently, having written a musical about Tony Blair.

TONY! [ The Tony Blair Rock Opera ] opens today, 7th May at Leicester Square Theatre, and promises to be a “reckless reappraisal” of the unpopular former prime minister.

Politics is a contentious topic that others may avoid, but not Hill.

Last month, the comedian told the Daily Star: “When you’re a comedian you have to be unafraid to offend people.

“If you think too hard about things, you’d never do half the jokes.

“We aren’t even-handed with this show. I think Tony would be a bit upset by it.”

TONY! is touring the UK until October.
