Crying Edinburgh Festival Fringe star ‘caught out’ as she ‘pulled same stunt last year’

An actress appears to have been rumbled after declaring her sadness at performing to an audience of just one person at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Georgie Grier took to X, formerly Twitter, following her show to share a teary selfie alongside an expression of disappointment in a post that later went viral with more than 14 million views.

It prompted online support from a host of big names in the comedy industry, including Jason Manford, Sarah Millican and Dara Ó Briain.

Amazingly, Grier then returned for a second night to perform in front of a sell-out crowd, which she jokingly greeted “Hello Wembley”, given the huge turnout.

But fans reckon she was pulling a “stunt”

However, some users have since accused the star of pulling the same “stunt” 12 months ago, suggesting she did so in a bid to encourage others to attend her show.

Following her appearance at the festival last week Grier wrote: “There was one person in my audience today when I performed my one woman play, ‘Sunsets’ at #edfringe. It’s fine, isn’t it? It’s fine…?”

She accompanied the post with a snap of herself wiping away tears as she looked sorrowfully into the camera.

But it now seems the tweet was very similar to one she made last year, when she revealed her parents were the only people who turned up to watch her perform.

In August 2022, alongside a promotional flyer for her show, she said: “Just had a cry because the only people who turned up to my first show were my parents.

“But when I had said cry in the bathroom, some other lovely Fringe performers gave me words of encouragement. And I guess two people is better than none?#EdinburghFringe.”

Other users on the platform appeared to be annoyed by the accusation, with one commenting: “She pulls off this digital begging act every year.”

Another wrote: “She certainly did better this year than the same stunt she pulled last year.”

Whilst a third joked: “The lass has more front than Sainsbury’s… I sort of admire her.”

The Fringe is legendary

The sole-attendee of Grier’s first show at this year’s festival has since spoken out in praise of the performer.

Sophie Craig wrote: “I was that one person in the lovely Georgie Grier’s audience. We had a lovely hug at the end and she was so professional and brave and she gave me everything. You should be so proud angel! Thank YOU! Now go get em girl'”

She later added: “It’s just so incredibly brave. Bringing a show up to the Fringe on your own, especially as a female and a new writer, is incredibly hard and she just smashed it.”
