The Exorcist remake set hit by ‘weird energy’ which influenced horror movie

The production of The Exorcist: Believer was marked by an unsettling “weird energy” that cast an eerie shadow over this upcoming supernatural film. This highly anticipated sequel serves as a direct continuation of the 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, in which Linda Blair famously portrayed Regan MacNeil, a 12-year-old girl ensnared by demonic possession.

Director David Gordon Green – who has helmed the Blumhouse Productions sequel – has now revealed that his shoot was affected by a “spiritual intensity” which made “s***” happen.”

In an interview with SFX magazine, Green was asked whether there had been any supernatural experiences during the shoot, to which he replied: “I can’t say it wasn’t, because when you get that type of spiritual intensity in a room – and I’m not just talking about the actors, and the characters or the subject matter, but the dolly grip, the boom operator, everybody’s bringing an energy.

“I don’t care what you believe in. When you get into a room with people with intensity, there’s s** that happens.” The original film was also no stranger to supernatural disturbances during its own production, leading the crew to speculate that the set itself was haunted.

Tragedies seemed to haunt the shoot, with nine individuals connected to the film meeting untimely deaths. Among them, Jack MacGowran, renowned for his role as Burke Dennings, succumbed to influenza merely a month before the movie’s release.

These eerie incidents only deepened the sense of foreboding surrounding the film. The movie was scheduled to hit theatres on October 13 until singer Taylor Swift announced that her Eras Tour concert film would be released that same day.

Blumhouse, the studio behind the Exorcist, moved the movie’s date up a week to avoid a clash with the pop star’s film, which is expected to do big numbers.

Jason Blum, the head of Blumhouse, has now commented on the decision, telling Entertainment Weekly: “The one thing that scares me to death is Taylor Swift!”

It was a big deal to move the date, as Friday the 13th in October would be the “single best day to release a scary movie,” Blum said. At one point, Blum apparently considered holding the date to create what he called Barbenheimer-like “Exorswift” moment, but he ultimately decided to shift The Believer’s date to avoid a head-to-head clash

“Obviously, we moved off that [date] and we bowed our head to Taylor Swift,” Blum said. “It was too risky to see if ‘Exorswift’ was going to take or not. People will still have the Exorswift opportunity, so maybe we got to have our cake and eat it too.”
