Gwyneth Paltrow defends herself as fans fume over ‘out of touch’ use of Oscar Award

Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken out against backlash she faced after saying that she uses her Oscar award as a door stop.

The star won Best Actress in 1999 for her role in Shakespeare in Love and a recent Vogue video showed Paltrow’s unconventional use for the coveted trophy.

In the clip, Paltrow showed viewers through her garden as the cameraman stopped to film her Oscar trophy, which could be seen on the ground propping open a large gate.

After the video was released, Gwyneth received some backlash as viewers took her word seriously. Comments began circulating online as fans commented on how “unapologetically out of touch” Paltrow had become.

The Royal Tenenbaums actress has since clarified herself to Variety: “Of course, it’s a joke.” Back in May 2023, Gwyneth spoke on the Call Her Daddy podcast and admitted that the win threw her into an “identity crisis”.

She confessed: “Once I won the Oscar, it put me into a bit of an identity crisis because if you win the biggest prize, like, what are you supposed to do? And where are you supposed to go?”

“It was hard receiving the amount of attention that you receive on a night like that and the weeks following, it’s so disorientating and frankly really unhealthy. I was like: “This is crazy. I don’t know what to do, I don’t know which way is up.”

Gwyneth went on to say that the experience “was a lot” and although she “wouldn’t give it back” as it was an “amazing experience,” the win “called a lot of things into question for her”.

At the time of her Oscar win, Paltrow’s father was being treated for cancer and the actress noted that the UK press were notably critical of her crying while on stage. She said that “people were so mean about it,” which caused her to notice a “big energy shift happening”.

The backlash caused her to consider “being less openhearted” and “much more protective of herself” while “filtering people out better”.
