Neil Patrick Harris was given step by step instructions for gory Gone Girl romp

Neil Patrick Harris was given step-by-step instructions while filming a gruesome romp for 2014 thriller Gone Girl, alongside Rosamund Pike.

In one scene, Rosamund’s character Amy seduces Desi, played by Harris – and brutally stabs him to death mid-romp. But practising for the scene meant “rehearsing porn” for hours on hours, and it took a lot of work under the watchful eyes of director David Fincher.

Speaking at Vulture Festival in 2017, Harris opened up: “David is exacting. He’s famous for multiple takes. Weird that it involved a really gory sex scene.

“In the same way, David really wanted the sex scene to be exact and understandably so, because they had two days to film it and it needs to look passionate and look improvised as sex is. But he didn’t want us to flop onto the bed in a different position because then it wouldn’t be useful to him because he couldn’t edit it.”

Neil Patrick Harris ‘rehearsed porn’ for hours for Gone Girl

He added: “Rosamund and I had to spend a whole afternoon working through a sex scene moment to moment. We had to just practice that, which is awkward and weird. For hours. We would film and practice it for hours and hours… We’re just rehearsing porn for hours.”

Neil said they rehearsed “every inch” of that scene, mimicking the instructions he was given: “Then you put your mouth on his d**k here and then this number of thrusts and then you ejaculate.”

No intimacy coordinator was involved in the scene, something Harris reflected on during an interview with Elle to promote his Netflix show Uncoupled. He said of the show: “It was actually kind of great. I had never worked with one before.

“Every time you’re doing a scene with any kind of intimacy, it makes perfect sense to have someone that’s there that’s going to be aware of anything you’re planning on doing and, if anyone is uncomfortable with anything, they can go to the coordinator to make that clear.”

With Gone Girl, the stars had to rehearse their own scenes. He said: “Rosamund and I just rehearsed how we wanted to have the sex scene happen. We had to go find David Fincher, who was in another room, and he came back in and sat there while we showed him. He was like, ‘Yeah, that will work.’ But that was different times.”

Harris, who is married to David Burtka, isn’t shy about discussing his real sex life, and admitted to sleeping with a woman in the mid-90s. He told Glamour: “In high school all my friends were sleeping with girls, and it just seemed like that’s what one did.

“So therefore that’s what I did, but it left me feeling unsettled, as if I had somehow done it wrong. That’s not a good feeling.” He went on: “Today, it’s cool to see a happy lesbian couple who are high school juniors. Better that than have those two girls marry people they’re not attracted to, have three kids, and then come out when they’re 50.”
