BBC presenter red-faced as he’s caught in X-rated error in huge slip up on air

One of the BBC’s most well-respected sports journalists has landed the broadcaster in hot water after making the rudest blunder so far.

The broadcaster, which is funded by the government and public money, has been embroiled in scandals in recent weeks after Maryam Moshiri was seen accidentally “flipping the bird” to the millions of people watching at home. Now, it seems there is a new addition to the line-up of awkward faux pas broadcast live on-air.

During the BBC’s News at One on Thursday (December 21), presenter Chetan Pathak came to viewers live from the BBC Sports Centre in Salford. Bringing the latest sports news to the public, things seemed relatively normal at first, with Chetan reading the stories off completely fine.

But things took a bit of a turn, as he began to cover Liverpool’s success at winning the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup. With manager Jurgen Klopp and the Reds filled with pride, Pathak tried to describe the elation of the team and the fans alike on the pitch.

Making the rather awkward remark about Klopp’s celebrations, Pathak uttered: “We saw him fisting…bumping his fists in the air there.” As he recognised his slip-up, Chetan cheekily chuckled to himself before quickly steadying himself and carrying on with the rest of the news for the day.

Those watching the show at home, however, were quick to point out Chetan’s mistake. Many then promptly took to social media to collectively ask whether they had heard the same thing.

One confused viewer simply asked: “Jürgen Klopp did what?” Whilst a second user praised Chetan for being able to recover so quickly, writing: “A miracle he didn’t dissolve into fits of laughter after that.”

Following the blunder, Chetan soon posted to social media himself, lamenting his mistake. “My apologies, lesson learnt,” he wrote in the post.

“The next time I think I’ll ad-lib a story, I’ll stick to what’s written on the autocue.” It marks the second time in a month that a BBC News presenter was seen slipping up live on-air.

Whilst presenting BBC News on its dedicated channel, Maryam Moshiri could be seen seemingly giving the public the middle finger for a split second before going back to her professional self. The hilarious moment caught live on-air went viral, but Maryam was quick to clarify why she had done so.

Writing a statement, the journalist said: “Hey everyone , yesterday just before the top of the hour I was joking around a bit with the team in the gallery. I was pretending to count down as the director was counting me down from 10-0.. including the fingers to show the number.”

She continued: “So from 10 fingers held up to one. When we got to 1 I turned finger around as a joke and did not realise that this would be caught on camera. It was a private joke with the team and I’m so sorry it went out on air! It was not my intention for this to happen and I’m sorry if I offended or upset anyone.

As she finished the statement, she ensured people that she did not do it maliciously: “I wasn’t ‘flipping the bird’ at viewers or even a person really. It was a silly joke that was meant for a small number of my mates.”
