‘I’m starring in tiny stage show – we can hear every single fart audience make’

Actress Cush Jumbo has revealed how the audience keep farting loudly during Macbeth.

The 38-year-old, who plays Lady Macbeth, said she and David Tennant – who plays Macbeth at the 251-capacity Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden – could hear every noise coming from the audience.

The mum-of-one and star of hit drama The Good Wife, said the audience were completely oblivious to the fact the actors could hear them trumping away in their seats.

Members of the audience all wear headphones during the performance, so they can hear ‘every whisper’ on the miked-up stage. Cush said, however, that the actors on stage didn’t wear headphones, meaning they could hear everything coming from the ‘tiny’ audience, including parps.

The actress said the audience were ‘unaware’ of how loud they were, adding: “The experience is designed to be immersive, with the headphones magnifying every stage whimper and whisper.

“The Donmar is tiny and they (the audience) are thinking ‘Well, no one else can hear me’ (because) they’ve got their headphones on.

“They can’t hear themselves rustling a sweet packet but we can…and they fart.”

She told the Culture supplement in The Sunday Times last week: “Audience behaviour has got weirder as time has gone on.”

Cush – who won a Laurence Olivier Award for playing Mark Antony in Julius Caesar in 2013 – is starring in new Apple TV+ drama Criminal Record, alongside Peter Capaldi.
