Katy Perry has sensationally quit her role on American Idol after seven years.
The 39-year old pop star, who has judged on the show since 2018 alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, allegedly felt “thrown under the bus” by producers making her appear as the “nasty judge” in their editing. The Roar singer appeared on US chat show on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday to promote the forthcoming season – but had a surprise in store for viewers.
Katy didn’t address reports she was unhappy on the panel but told Jimmy: “You know, actually this fall in September I’m going to be doing this huge music festival in Brazil called Rock In Rio. It’s really exciting. It’s a big deal.”

She continued: “It’s a big deal for people all over the world, especially for my Brazilian fans. I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for Idol. I mean, I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with, like, the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse.”

Clearly taken aback, Jimmy asked: “The pulse of Rio? Wow, wow. What did Luke and Lionel say about this?” Mum-of-one Katie responded: “Well, they’ll find out tonight. They know that I have some things planned for this year.”
“They’ll miss you on that show, I’m sure” Jimmy said, still surprised. Katy replied: “I love them so much”, prompting Jimmy to quip: “So much you didn’t tell them.”

Katy, who is engaged to actor Orlando Bloom explained her co-stars would have sensed something was “different” owing to the amount of time she’d spent in the studio recently. “I love the show so much,” she added. “But I want to go and see the world and maybe bring new music.
“Maybe I’ll come back if they have me one day.” Katy, born Katheryn Hudson stunned as she arrived for Jimmy’s ABC show in a full-length black cutout dress. The figure-hugging Aya Muse gown offered a glimpse of the star’s chest and toned tummy, as well as a slit side that teased a look at her legs.

Orlando proposed to Katy on Valentine’s Day in 2019, and are set to marry later this year after their original 2020 plans were scuppered by the coronavirus pandemic. A source told Heat magazine that the pair hope to marry closer to California after originally setting their sights on a ceremony in Japan.
“Doing something closer to home in California makes a lot more sense,” the source explained. “Their place in Montecito has nine acres so there’s plenty of room to do it there. Plus, it’s close to LA so all of their showbiz friends could easily attend.”
