The Chase player vows to avenge mum’s defeat to The Governess – but things don’t work out

A contestant on The Chase failed in his bid to avenge his mum’s defeat on the ITV show on Thursday (March 14).

Host Bradley Walsh introduced David, a management consultant from Norwich. After explaining his passion for escape rooms, the 28-year old revealed he had applied for the show after his mum Catherine left with nothing during her own appearance seven years ago.

And just as she was back in 2017, David was tasked with taking on Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty. In his cash-builder round, he struggled with a series of difficult questions, and answered just three correctly.

After conferring with teammates Andrew, Rebecca and Jo, David opted to play for Anne’s “safe offer” of £1,000, meaning he would start three positions closer to home as they faced off.

Anne soon added to the family’s woes, however, making light work of David’s competition and catching him three places from home. Asked by Brad afterwards if he had faired any better than his mum, David admitted: “No, she only had two places to go.”

Over on X (formerly Twitter) viewers reacted to David’s performance and naturally compared it to that of his mum. “Oh dear David, like your mother, not good at all.” bemoaned one user.

Another wrote: “So much for avenging your mother, David.” A third hit out: “On the show to avenge your mum and you go for the lower offer.” And a fourth quipped: “Takes after his mum apparently.”

Mum Catherine’s 2017 installment saw her take part with fellow contestants Duncan, Jodie and Andy, who banked just £9,000 between them before losing to Anne in the final chase – who still had another 49 seconds left on the clock to catch them.

Anne proved victorious again today, meanwhile, albeit by a much narrower margin. With £18,000 at stake for Andrew, Rebecca and Jo, The Governess denied the trio with just a single second to spare.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV and ITVX.
