Antiques Roadshow guest speechless as she spent £30 bingo win on ‘modern treasure’

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left gobsmacked after she found out the true value of a dress she bought with a £30 bingo win.

The iconic BBC show is no stranger to a jaw-dropping moment. Since its debut, the series has seen a ton of unusual items get valued for eye-watering amounts.

And back during an episode in 2023 – things took a rather dramatic turn for one guest. The show was once again hosted by Fiona Bruce, who brought an air of calm to proceedings as the guest approached the table.

And for this episode, it was set in Dorset’s Swanage Pier. One person keen to get their item valued, brought in a gold gold Biba dress.

She explained to expert Mark Hill she bought the frock after winning £30 at bingo in 1971. She said: “I won £30 at the bingo so the whole lot went on a Biba dress.”

The expert was amazed by the condition of the dress. He said: “You must have felt like Shirley Bassey in this.”

Mark added: “This is as wearable today as it was back then. It is exactly what people want at the moment. With a name like Biba in this condition, it is an absolute stunner as well as a sparkler.”

The expert then revealed that the dress would fetch for around £400 in today’s market. Hearing the amount, the guest was left with her jaw on the floor as she quipped: “I wish I could still get into it.”

Recently, fans of the show were left blindsighted after a guest brought in an item with a rather rude-sounding name. During an episode on Sunday (March 17) on BBC One, a guest spoke to antiques expert Joanna Hardy about the value of the chain that she had brought in. Giving back story, she explained that her aunt had previously owned the gold chain and had bestowed it on to her – which the family having ownership of the chain since the 1950s.

Looking at the necklace, Joanna made the awkward remark which sent viewers into a spin. Taking a deep look at the detail and markings of the chain, she exclaimed: “It’s nearly 200 years old! It’s a belcher link chain or we call it a muff chain.”

However, whilst Hardy continued to inspect the muff chain, some fans at home were left dumbfounded and immediately took to social media to double check whether they had heard the correct name. “A gold muff chain that you attach to your muff – is that a euphemism?” asked one confused viewer.
