BBC Graham Norton’s most bizarre celebrity guest request in show’s 17 year history

A BBC producer has revealed one of the most shocking requests from a guest on The Graham Norton Show.

The Friday night programme has seen a number of well-known faces seated on Graham’s couch throughout the past 17 years as they discuss their career highlights. But before they take on the light-hearted questions from the host, some A-List stars such as Lady Gaga, Johnny Depp and Will Smith have been known to make strict demands.

Show producer Graham Stuart has now revealed the request that stood out the most. He said: “I can’t give names, but we once had a major artist insist on a second dressing room.

“Which, you know, that’s fair enough. But…it was for their phone.”

The producer explained they try their best to “look after people” and “make them feel comfortable”. However, he told Metro: “You can ask for insane things… But why would we, why would we give them?”

In 2018, presenter Graham explained how bizarre he found the experience. He said on his show: “Someone from their team came running into the production office saying ‘It’s a 911 situation. We need another dressing room!’ We managed it but said, ‘Just out of interest, what’s it for?’

“Completely straight-faced [they replied]: ‘They want to charge their phone.’ That really surprised us. I don’t understand why someone’s life gets to the point where they can’t be in the same room as their phone.”

In 2017, Graham spilled the beans to The Daily Telegraph about some of the best and worst interviews he’s had. According to the 60-year-old, Tom Cruise was an “incredible” guest who remembered everyone’s names. And Will Smith and Tom Hanks were top notch too.

However, a guest who made it onto Graham’s naughty list last year was Harvey Weinstein. The tainted film producer, now 71 and found guilty of numerous sex crimes, put pressure on Graham to get a spot on his talk show.

Talking to the Evening Standard last year, he reckoned: “He’s in jail, so he gets the prize for the worst guest ever.” Graham explained that Harvey tried to pressure him to appear on the show.

Although the time he wanted was booked, Harvey insisted that he should be put on. Describing the experience, Graham said it was “sort of chilling in retrospect” as it was “an insight into how that man is”.
