Paul Mescal opened up about a rather awkward moment that happened while filming a racy sex scene.
The Irish star shot to fame in the 2020 BBC Three and Hulu series, Normal People. And it’s fair to say Paul and his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones left the nation feeling very hot under the collar.
Packed to the brim with sex scenes, the racy 12-part-programme saw the pair get down and dirty countless times. So much so, that the show, based on Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel, was dubbed the Beebs’ raunchiest production ever.

The series follows Paul’s character Connell Waldron and Daisy’s character Marianne Sheridan, who embark on a tumultuous romance. And of course, there are a ton of raunchy moments.
But it turns out, filming the long and intense sex scenes was anything but sexy. He revealed: “On the Friday of the first week, me and Daisy had to do a day of sex scenes and we were covered in this gel called Egyptian Magic.
“It’s basically fake sweat. We had to switch positions and our bodies were in close contact.”
Paul went on: “When we separated it made a really loud fart noise. Me and Daisy started hysterically laughing, but the crew and director (Lenny Abrahamson) all thought that one of us had farted and really were trying to preserve our dignity.”
Opening up more about the incident on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Paul said: “It made this massive fart noise like, aggressively loud! Me and Daisy started cackling.
“But the funniest part was that the crew were being so diligent that they were like, ‘Okay, Paul or Daisy have farted here but we’re not going to [make a thing of it].’ So we had to tell them it was our bodies making contact.”
Paul also once opened up about how he instantly got on with Daisy and there was no need to “force chemistry” before the pair got down and dirty for the naughty series.
“There was an understanding that me and Daisy would fundamentally get on. It can be detrimental to force chemistry onto people.”
“We didn’t spend a huge amount of time together. We spent the guts of two weeks. The production weren’t like, you go off and get to know each other,” he told Backstage Live.
The Irish star went on to add: “If you let things sit and trust these people understand the characters… and ultimately trusting that we are people who respect each other and over time we’ll be friends.
“We spent time with Lenny rehearsing the scenes. It was a nice gentle time of talking and creating a playlist for the characters.”
Speaking about being catapulted to international recognition in just three months, the Irish star said: “It takes some adapting to. It’s not something that you learn in drama school, I have amazing friends both in the acting community and outside of it and a family that keeps me grounded.”
