Ryan Reynolds ‘gutted’ by Deadpool co-star’s ‘sudden’ death as he pays touching tribute

Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool and Wolverine team are mourning the sudden death of crew member Ray Chan.

As the lead production designer for the hotly anticipated third Deadpool installment, Chan’s unexpected passing has left the entire production “devastated”. He leaves behind his wife Lindsay and children Caspar and Sebastian. The cause of his death is yet to be revealed.

Reynolds, who is both producer and star of Deadpool 3, expressed his grief to Deadline, stating that Ray was “as valuable a creative force on Deadpool and Wolverine as the writers, director, and stars… he built worlds from scratch – and did so in the most collaborative and inclusive ways. Ray was peerless.”

The Marvel universe is in mourning after the announcement of Ray’s death on Wednesday, April 24. Marvel boss Kevin Feige was quick to pay tribute, saying: “Ray was first and foremost a good friend to everyone at Marvel Studios.

“He was a talented collaborator who brought creativity and attention to detail to every frame of every movie he worked on, and who was able to bring out the best in each department he worked with,” according to a heartfelt statement from Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito to Deadline, reports the Mirror.

Feige added: “He was the nicest human being and was such a pleasure to work with, hugely generous, and the kind of person who could take the seed of an idea and turn it into something beautiful. We are devastated by his passing. He will be missed by everyone at Marvel, and our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends.”

Starting his journey with Marvel Studios as a supervising art director on 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, Chan became a key figure in shaping the visual splendour of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His impressive portfolio also includes Guardians, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, Infinity War, and Endgame.

Beyond that, he lent his art direction expertise to Spider-Man: Far From Home and showcased his production design prowess on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and the forthcoming Deadpool and Wolverine.

“The loss of Ray is devastating to all of us who worked on Deadpool and Wolverine. Ray did more than design the world of our movie; he lit up the world around him,” Shawn Levy, writer-director of Deadpool and Wolverine, shared. “Truly, anyone who knew Ray, or was lucky enough to collaborate with him as we were, experienced this beacon of a man: kind, warm, tenaciously devoted, and relentlessly inspiring Ray worked and lived with a joyous and contagious humanity that is rare. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.”
