EastEnders Stevie Mitchell’s real reason for returning has been “rumbled” — and fans think it’s not because he’s dying or ill.
The character, played by Alan Ford, rocked up to Walford earlier this year. As the estranged dad of Billy (Perry Fenwick), he first appeared on screen in January for the funeral of Aunt Sal (Anna Karen).
However, he was warned by Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) to stay away after having surrendered Billy into care as a child. From the age of ten, Billy grew up in care after Stevie took sole custody of his brother Charlie. The pair last saw each other off-screen over 25 years ago.

Fast forward to last week, and Stevie turned up to the Vic – much to the shock of son Billy. At first, Billy wanted nothing to do with him, suspicious of his reasons for returning.
But according to Stevie, he showed up in a bid to reconnect with his family. Stevie has since charmed his way into the family, even exposing Nadine Kellar’s fake pregnancy.
However, the character has still left fans with plenty of questions over his return. Some have since claimed that Stevie’s secret could be that he is ill, dying or lonely, and merely wanting to reconnect with his family.
However, other viewers reckon there is a hidden agenda at play. Online, fans have shared their theory that Stevie actually has another child – meaning a brand new Mitchell family could turn up to the famous square.
On a Reddit thread, one person said: “Surely it’s too soon after the Eddie Knight story for Stevie to come in as a villain.
“I think it’s going to be revealed that he has another child and eventually a whole new Mitchell family will rock up,” they added. While on X, formerly known as Twitter, one person said: “I think Sal went to the grave with the biggest Mitchell secret, there’s another Mitchell out there I bet.
“Either Stevie’s son with Sal, or linking Phil & Billy together even more with a mutual half-brother,” they added. A third mused: “I wonder if Charlie and Billy are half-brothers (different mums). Or Stevie has Alzheimer’s or been married more than once like Val is the secret mother of the new Mitchells coming in?”
