Only Fools And Horses have only just realised that what they thought was a joke, was far from it.
The show hasn’t seen any new episodes released in decades, but fresh fans are still finding it nowadays. But that means that a younger generation has been watching it – and some of it has completely gone over their heads.
Sharing their thoughts on the Only Fools And Horses Reddit community, a few fans have admitted to a bit of a blunder. “I just discovered something I thought was a running gag was simply me being too young,” u/SyNiiCaL confessed.

They went on: “I’m 31, watched this show through my life and always thought the ‘I’ve got two GCEs’ was a joke, bragging about having the education qualifications but not being educated enough to correctly say GCSEs. I thought it was typical OFAH humour.

“Then I found out GCSEs used to be called GCEs and I felt a right bloody idiot.”
On another thread in the community, u/69villa96 said: “Anytime Rodney mentions he has two GCEs it gets a laugh from the audience. I used to think it was because he was getting GCSEs wrong but turns out they were called GCEs back then. So are they just laughing at his somewhat modest achievements?”
Another user explained: “Yeah, it’s standard for kids to take (and pass) at least seven or eight GCSEs so passing two is really nothing to brag about.”

GCSEs – General Certificate of Secondary Education – were introduced in 1986, though the first exams weren’t taken until 1988. Previously, students took the CSE (Certificate of Secondary Education) or O-Levels, which were for the brighter kids.
O-Levels were also known as GCEs (General Certificate of Education). Before GCSEs were introduced, a separate “16+” exam was trialled, which would award a CSE and O-Level certificate.
