Benidorm’s Michael Garvey unrecognisable at 26 – and even has a child

The hit TV series Benidorm has been the talk of the town since it landed on Netflix, as it’s taken Brits on a nostalgic journey.

Penned by Derren Litten and produced by Tiger Aspect for ITV, the show aired for 10 seasons from 2007 to 2018. The plot revolved around a host of characters holidaying at the Solana all-inclusive hotel in Benidorm, Spain, providing plenty of laughs along the way.

One character who quickly won over viewers was Michael Garvey, portrayed by actor Oliver Stokes. Now 26, Stokes looks unrecognisable compared to his younger self when he first graced our screens.

Post-Benidorm, he took on roles such as Don Weatherby’s son in Heartbeat (2008), Nigel Clough in The Damned United (2009), George Davies in an episode of Doctors in 2012 and also made an appearance in Casualty in 2017.

Oliver is now a proud father, having welcomed a son named Archie in recent years. He’s come a long way since his days as a key member of the Garvey family nearly two decades ago.

The Garveys, consisting of Mick (Steve Pemberton), Janice (Siobhan Finneran), Chantelle (Hannah Hobley), Madge (Sheila Reid) and Michael, featured in seven series of Benidorm. Their departure from the show seemed to be a collective decision, with the cast feeling it was time to embark on new ventures.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the time, Pemberton said: “Benidorm has always been more than just a TV show for us. We’re such good friends and part of one big happy family.

“Working on Benidorm has been the most fun I’ve ever had. I’d have kept going for the rest of my life, but there are other considerations. It was a very difficult decision, but the amount of time we were away from home was key.

“We all sat down and discussed it during series 6. It’s great that we had the same instinct to go at the same time. No one wanted to go on their own.”

Even though it was on the box a long time ago, fans are still absolutely mad for the comedy, and recently raved about how series 10 has hit Netflix. Many people shared their happiness of the news on Reddit, where they stated they hope it one day makes a return.

One person said: “Sounds like a rewatch occasion.” Another chimed in with: “Finally! It’s been so annoying that they missed out a season, so I’m so happy to hear this.”

A third also replied: “So exciting! I hope they resurrect the theatre show too – would love to see that soon. Thanks for sharing such good news!”
