Suranne Jones has signed up to do a new comedy.
The actress will play unconventional mum Suz in Film Club .
It will be a world away from the serious roles we’ve see her do for hits including Vigil , Doctor Foster and Gentlemen Jack. Suranne has already started filming the series on location in Manchester.
The star, who is from the city, said: “It’s smart, sweet and punchy and I get to film in my home town too!” Suranne’s daughter will be played by Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood.
It’s a dream come true for her because she’s a big fan of the actress. She said: “I’ve loved Aimee for a while now and think she is a beautifully real, honest and brilliantly funny talent.”
Other stars in the cast include House Of The Dragon’s Ralph Davis and Happy Valley actor Adam Long. Bosses reckon they will all make the series a smash hit.
Exec producer Alison Jackson said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have our dream cast for this precious show.
“It’s a real reflection of the fabulous scripts and we can’t wait to bring them to life.”
Suranne herself certainly needs no sex education. In 2019, she took on the role of fearless lesbian Anne Lister in BBC One costume drama Gentleman Jack. Packed to the brim with racy scenes, it follows the true story of Anne, who sent shockwaves through the West Yorks during the Victorian era over her sexuality.
One of the most graphic scenes is when viewers see a naked Anne spooning a woman in bed as she pleasures her from behind. Another sees her performing a sex act on a woman totally naked – with her head buried between her legs.
It’s fair to say viewers watching the racy drama were left flustered at the time. Over on X one person said: “Everything about #GentlemanJack is excellent, give me all the lesbian period dramas please.”
Someone else added: “Just caught up with Gentleman Jack and couldn’t take my eyes off Suranne Jones . Great show totally gripped on this drama.” A third gushed: “Wtf that was not what I wanted to see while sat watching with my family.”
● The six-parter will air next year on BBC Three.
