Barbara Windsor's husband emotional as fans raise £100k for Alzheimer's charity

Dame Barbara Windsor ‘s husband Scott Mitchell is stunned after fans donated £100k to an Alzheimer’s charity fundraiser he set up just five days ago.

The EastEnders and Carry On Legend died aged 83 earlier this month in the London care home she lived in after battling Alzheimer’s for six years.

Before her death, she had campaigned with Scott, 57, for better provision for Alzheimer’s sufferers and their families.

On Thursday Scott set up the page for fans to donate to Alzeimer’s Research UK, to continue with the vital search for a cure.

The cash has poured in ever since, with a staggering £83,000 believed to have been donated from bingo site JackpotJoy which Barbara worked for.

Speaking of his astonishment at the huge amount raised, Scott said told The Sun: “I have been completely overwhelmed by the response from Barbara’s fans, friends and former colleagues.

“This outpouring of support has filled me with pride and been a huge comfort to me. It just shows how loved, respected and adored my Barbara was. That’s magical.

“I’m determined to honour her legacy by doing everything I can to support dementia research and help Alzheimer’s Research UK’s search for a cure.”

Scott also told he wanted the JustGiving page to be used as a platform for mourners to offer their sympathies while donating to charity.

Last week Scott called on fans to help Alzheimer’s Research UK in her honour in a post on the charity’s Facebook page.

Alongside a snap of himself with the EastEnders legend, Scott wrote: “I’ve been asked by so many people what they can do to honour Barbara and both of our wishes was for more money to be invested into dementia research.

“That’s why I’d ask people, if they can, to share their memories of Barbara and consider a donation to Alzheimer’s Research UK, however small or large. Alzheimer’s Research UK is a charity that’s doing so much to ensure future generations don’t have to go through the same heartbreak I and so many others have.

“The donation page will also act as an online book of condolence, where people can share their many stories, tributes and anecdotes about her. I know that will provide comfort to so many, and I’ll be reading every one of them.”
