Bobby Davro says coronavirus is 'robbing him of time with frail 95-year-old dad'

Bobby Davro has told how coronavirus has forced him apart from his frail dad.

The comedy legend, 62, is banned from visiting beloved Bill at his care home because of strict guidelines.

And it has left both men struggling to cope.

In an emotional interview that will strike a chord with many, Bobby tells the Daily Star Sunday how painful it is not being able to comfort 95-year-old Bill.

He said: “My dad had to move into a care home because he started to get weaker and needed full-time care. And because of that I can’t see him.

“This has been the worst year of my life. Talking about it upsets me.

“It is truly awful because he is fading as the days go by. They won’t have tests until the new year. I just hope he can hold on.

“I don’t like to think about it. My poor old dad – I love him so much. He is my hero.

“I hope he has a few more months. If he got the virus he wouldn’t stand a chance.”

Bobby has tried to keep former athlete Bill’s spirits up with phone calls, and hopes he will be all-owed to visit on Christmas Eve. As he opened up about his torment, the comic seemed a world away from the light-hearted character who made him a superstar in the 1980s.

He added: “I’m not dealing with it particularly well. It has had an extremely bad effect on me. It has made me very sad and very angry and very disillusioned.

“But I am blessed with wonderful children and incredible friends who I can turn to for support.”

Bobby is furious with the restrictions that have stopped people visiting loved-ones in care homes.

He said: “I think it’s extremely cruel for all parties. It must be very confusing for the people in care homes to think, ‘One minute my relatives are coming, so why are they not coming to see me any more. Do they not love me?’”

Bobby will be performing a charity gig at a care home in Surrey on Tuesday.

He be alongside pal Simon Gross, whose new single Showbiz Christmas is in aid of Age UK.

Bobby said: “I want to do my bit. This project is really close to my heart. It is nice to give something back.

“Being able to help others is a good thing. Doing this is very rewarding.

“This is positive, and positive is what we need.” For more details about the charity visit ageuk.org.uk.
