Eddie Izzard praised for requesting use of 'she/her' pronouns in TV appearance

Eddie Izzard won support and praise from fans after requesting to be referred to using ‘she’ and ‘her’ pronouns during a television appearance.

The 58-year-old comedian and activist was guest-starring on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year which saw art hopefuls create a portrait of the star in four hours.

Throughout the show, host Stephen Mangan and the contestants and judges referred to Izzard using ‘she’ and ‘her’ pronouns.

When asked why she wanted to appear on the programme, Eddie explained: “I try to do things that I think are interesting. This is the first programme I’ve asked if I can be ‘she’ and ‘her’ – this is a little transition period.”

Eddie was then asked how it feels, and she replied: “Well, it feels great because people assume that … they just know me from before, but I’m gender fluid. I just want to be based in girl mode from now on.”

Viewers watching were impressed as Eddie was addressed as ‘she’ and ‘her’ by the contestants.

Fans praised the media personality and branded her a “trailblazer” for the LGBT community.

Many fans supported Eddie online at the weekend after watching her appearance on the show on Thursday.

One viewer tweeted: “Just discovered Eddie Izzard now uses she/her pronouns love you, Eddie, thanks for being a trail blazer.”

While another gushed: “Just watched Portrait Artist of the Year with Eddie Izzard…first public outing as she/her (gender fluid) how refreshing.”

Others defended the comedian after seeing some hurtful online comments.

One typed: “I’m seeing a lot of cruelty directed at Eddie Izzard for asking politely for people to use she/her pronouns.

“Eddie has been trans since the mid-80s. Eddie has been happy with she/her pronouns for years.

“She’s just now asking for people to drop the he/him pronouns she used to use.”
