Laura Tobin says she 'wants to help' Good Morning Britain co-star Kate Garraway

Laura Tobin has praised her Good Morning Britain colleague Kate Garraway for being “amazing” as her husband continues to fight Covid-19.

Kate’s husband of 15 years, Derek Draper, contracted coronavirus in March and he ended up in a coma for months, and he is still battling the deadly disease.

However, 53-year-old Kate has continued to host Good Morning Britain and put on a brave face for viewers and her co-hosts.

In a recent interview, weather presenter Laura admitted it was difficult not living close to mum-of-two Kate in order to be there to offer immediate support when she needs it.

Laura said: “You just want to feel helpful but it’s hard. I don’t live near her, so I can’t take the kids off her hands.

“So, I asked her if she’d like a massage. She’s looking after everyone else, so I wanted to look after her.

“She grounds everybody when she’s in the studio, she’s just amazing.”

Laura, 39, added that she was “in awe” of how Kate has handled the ongoing nightmare.

“She’s always got lots of plates spinning anyway, but I guess she has this one big plate spinning all the time,” she said.

“She comes to [the studio] really early to get prepared for the show and remembers every interview she’s ever done,” before adding that Kate is “one of the smartest people” she knows.

Laura’s comments come after Kate admitted she is finding it difficult to organise Christmas and keep everyone happy.

The ITV host explained to Ben Shephard on Thursday’s Good Morning Britain that she’s determined to make Christmas as normal as possible for the sake of the children but that it has been hard.

Kate said the quest to do the right thing left her having a “lively” conversation with Derek’s parents amid fears they could catch the virus if they travelled over Christmas.

Speaking frankly, Kate said: “It’s lovely to be back. Well there have been a few challenges kicking off and going on, challenge with Derek as there always are but also outside of Derek there was a little scare.

“We found out that children had been in contact with someone who tested positive shortly after they met.

“So just to be ultra cautious I kept them at home and we luckily all got negative tests. We actually had two negative tests as you know, more is more.”

The former I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star continued: “I did think this is going to be very difficult.

“I have had it before but there is a lack of clarity if after six months you don’t have the antibodies any more.

“Back then in March nobody offered us a coronavirus test, they just weren’t happening – it was right back when hospitals were swamped in that funny week where schools had just closed but lockdown hadn’t started.

“Anyway, we are all fine, we are all safe, but I just wanted to keep you safe Ben and the crew at Smooth Radio so we just started isolating until we got the clearings,” she added.
