Paul McCartney says he can speak to pal George Harrison through 'spirit tree'

Sir Paul McCartney has spoken about connecting with his former bandmate from his Beatles heyday, George Harrison, who died in 2001.

George died at Paul’s home on Heather Road, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles after suffering from cancer.

Liverpool legend Paul, 78, said that the spirit of the late George now inhabits a tree at the entrance to his home and admitted to speaking to the plant on a daily basis.

He went on to say that following George’s death aged 58, his spirit “entered” the tree that he had been gifted by his bandmate and that he finds comfort in knowing he is able to speak with him whenever he wants.

Speaking on NPR, Paul spoke candidly about the fir tree which sits at the entrance to his Sussex estate.

“George was very into horticulture, a really good gardener, so he gave me a tree as a present,” he said.

The Yellow Submarine singer added: “It’s a big fir tree and it’s by my gate.

“I get out of the car, close the gate, look up at the tree and say, ‘Hi George’. There he is, growing strongly.

“And you know, that takes me back to the time when I hitchhiked with him! They’re an ever-present presence if that’s a way to say.”

Stella McCartney’s father went on to say: “It’s lovely, he gave it to me — I just planted it but then, as the years go by, every time I look at it I go, ‘That’s the tree George gave me’.

“George has entered that tree, for me. I hope he’s happy with that.”

The two everlasting friends first met in the 1950s, just days after George had turned 15 – the pair performed alongside fellow bandmate John Lennon for the first time at the wedding reception of Paul’s cousin, Harry ‘Ian’ Harris and his new wife, Jackie.

After officially forming as The Beatles with Lennon and Ringo Starr, the group went on to become one of the biggest bands of all time, as well as becoming the best-selling musical group.

Paul is currently sitting at the top of the US Billboard chart with his latest album, McCartney III, which he recorded during the first lockdown period in the Spring.

The songwriter wrote every track on the album as well as played all instruments that feature on the record.
