Rolling Stones' legend Keith Richards turns back on music in favour of gardening

Musician Keith Richards has turned his back on booze and drugs and taken up gardening.

The Rolling Stones wild man has spent the last six months watering his vegetable patch.

The 76-year-old guitarist’s passion for horticulture is a world away from his rock’n’roll excesses.

Richards revealed his secret passion for plants in an interview with Goldmine magazine as he released a live album with his side project The X-Pensive Winos.

The rocker, who has homes in West Sussex and Connecticut, said the lockdown had helped him appreciate his garden more.

“I saw the garden grow – really quite unbelievable,” he said.

“I spent the whole summer actually admiring the garden and also doing a bit of gardening myself – watering the veggies and the stuff.

“I got into a more normal way of life, which is un-normal.”

Fellow hard-living bandmate Ronnie Wood, 73, who has admitted to past alcohol, cocaine and heroin binges, said he has taken up knitting.

Speaking on the Tea With Twiggy podcast he went on to say: “I do knit, I used to hold the spool of wool for my mum.

“She taught me the plain stitch and I still do it today. I knit endless scarves now.”

Keith rose to fame in the 1960s, best known as the co-founder, guitarist and main songwriter for the iconic band Rolling Stones.

He went on to front side project the X-Pensive Winos as well as producing hit records for the likes of Aretha Franklin.

Since bursting onto the music scene, he has also released a string of solo pieces of work – including the 1978 release of Run Rudolph Run, a cover of Chuck Berry’s original.

His last solo body of work, Crosseyed Heart, was released in September 2015 – peaking at number seven on the Official UK Charts.

Fans of Keith were left somewhat shocked following the release of his 2010 autobiography, Life by Keith Richards in which he revealed an usual love.

A huge fan of the classic shepherd’s pie, he urged readers to add more onions after cooking the lamb to enhance the flavour of the meaty treat.
