Musician Spencer Davis, who founded the beat band The Spencer Davis Group, has died at the age of 81.
The Welsh singer produced several hits in the 1960s including Keep on Running, I’m A Man and Gimme Some Lovin’.
He died on October 19 from a heart attack in California, according to the band’s drummer Pete York.
However, his agent said that he died in hospital while having treatment for pneumonia.
Following the news, tributes have been paid on social media by fans and friends of the musician.
Taking to Twitter, actor Stuart Anthony wrote: “Saddened to hear that Spencer Davis has passed away aged 81. What a legend he was and one of the nicest guys. Had some incredible stories.”

One fan posted: “Sad news about Spencer Davis. Legend.”
Another admirer said: “Another one gone, rest in peace Spencer Davis.”
Radio Caroline presenter Suzy Wilde told fans: “I’m so very, very saddened to learn of the passing of Spencer Davis.
“He was such a lovely man, generous and kind, warm and funny, and will be much missed. RIP dear Spencer.”

Spencer was inspired to begin a career in music after hearing an American rhythm and blues band play a rare gig in his hometown of Swansea as a teenager.
He formed his own group, The Saints, along with friend Bill Perks – later known as Bill Whyman, the bassist for the Rolling Stones.
Davis then moved to Birmingham to study German at the University of Birmingham where he dated Christine Perfect, who went on to marry Fleetwood Mac’s John McVie.

Spencer formed the self-titled The Spencer Davis Group in 1963 after persuading established jazz artists Muff and Steve Windwood, to join him and friend Pete York on the project.
The band went on to have a string of hit singles, including the with chart-toppers Keep On Running in 1965 and Somebody Help Me in 1966.
After their success, the band went their separate ways in the late 1960s.
However various incarnations of the group continued to tour in recent years, under Davis’ direction.
He reportedly named the original band after himself after the other members did not want to be hounded to give interviews.
Spencer became an honorary member of the Wales nationalist party Plaid Cymru later in his career.
He continued to support the political party after moving to Catalina Island.
