The Chase viewers branded one contestant as “patronising” on tonight’s show when a player named Shirley stepped up to the plate.
Deciding between Chaser Mark Labbett’s low offer of £1,000, and the middle offer of £3,000, Shirley turned to her teammates for advice.
Wrestling-fan David suggested Shirley ought to plump for the low offer, adding that she could “fill in the gaps” in their knowledge.
However, Shirley refused the low offer, and stuck to her guns by opting for the middle offer – much to viewers’ delight.
She announced: “I’ve got to play fairly.”
Taking to Twitter, certain viewers branded David’s comment as “patronising,” as they backed Shirley’s decision to stay in the middle.
One said: “‘You can fill in gaps in our knowledge’ bit patronising.”
A second agreed: “Patronising a woman because of her age…”
While a third chimed: “‘I’ve got to play fairly’ – well said Shirley!”
Shirley had host Bradley Walsh in stitches on this evening’s episode, when she invited him along on her next holiday to keep her company.
With her husband having grown tired of travelling, Shirley admitted she was looking for a pal to join her on her next voyage.
She said: “I’m going to rent a chap, to perhaps dance with me and leave.”
Turning to Bradley, she joked: “Gonna volunteer?”
Bent double in laughter, Bradley joked: “This is what I’m going to do, I’m going to invent a company called ‘rent a chap’!”
Later, quiz legend Mark Labbett came up with another idea, as he volunteered fellow Chaser Shaun Wallace for the gig.
Shirley wondered: “How much will he charge?”
Brad responded: “For you? Free!”
The Chase airs on weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
