The Weeknd urges fans to get behind Captain Tom Moore for number one spot

Blinding Lights hitmaker The Weekend is happy to miss out on losing a UK number one to army veteran Captain Tom Moore who looks set to hit the top spot with Michael Ball.

Captain Tom Moore has currently raised over £28 million for the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.

Latest sales and streaming data released by the Official Charts Company show that Blinding Lights by The Weeknd, which has recently become a TikTok sensation is creeping up to 99-year-old Captain Moore’s cover of You’ll Never Walk Alone with Michael Ball.

Even though Captain Moore is in the lead for landing the famous top spot, his campaign hit new levels of fame when the 30-year-old Canadian star took to Twitter to promote it.

Tweeting to his 11.8 million followers, The Weeknd whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, tweeted: “everyone in the UK please support @captaintommoore / @mrmichaelball single so this incredible 99 yr old war veteran, walking for the British National Health Service @NHSuk & now raised $35 Million can have a No 1 for his 100th birthday in the UK!

“We’re rooting for you. XO!”

Captain Tom Moore’s official Twitter account replied: “My goodness, how gracious of you @theweeknd. Benji tells me you’re rather talented and very popular! What a kind gesture. Thank you!”

Radio 1 legend Scott Mills has revealed that this is the closest race he has witnessed in several years, with just 18,000 sales separating the pair.

Speaking to The Sun, he said: “This chart battle is so down to the wire. I remember when I first did the charts show on Radio 1, years ago and it was Rage Against The Machine going up against Joe McElderry.

“Rage came out on top in the end and no one expected that to happen. The race between Tom and The Weeknd reminds me of that because it’s so tight.”

The official chart closes at midnight on Fridays, before being released at 4 pm on BBC Radio 1.

World War II veteran Captain Moore was awarded a special Daily Mirror Pride of Britain award by Carol Vorderman on yesterdays Good Morning Britain.

He had completed 100 laps of his garden to raise funds for the NHS.
