US rapper Chika praises Duffy's courage to open up about kidnap and rape ordeal

Singer Duffy took three years to pluck up the courage to publicly reveal her rape kidnap hell.

US rapper Jane “Chika” Oranika said Duffy confided in her back in 2017 when they were both in a “low place”.

Chika said: “She was so worried for me and recognised I was dealing with depression. She told me her story.

“She changed my life for the better after someone attempted to change hers for the worse. We need more people like her.”

Support has poured in for the Welsh singer – real name Aimee Anne Duffy – after she revealed she was drugged, raped and held captive for several days .

The Mercy singer then stayed out of the public eye for years while recovering.

Sex assault campaigners and trauma experts also praised the 35-year-old for talking about her ordeal.

Rape Crisis boss Katie Russell said: “Rape is still a very under-discussed, misunderstood and under-reported crime, so when someone like Duffy speaks out in such a powerful way it can make other survivors feel a little bit less alone and less ashamed – which is a common emotion, no matter how unfounded,”

She added: “Duffy is speaking now after a long time, which is really common in our experience.

“It’s important to remember that the majority of people don’t report rape, and those that do may take some time. And anyone who ends up on a jury should remember that it is a very common impact of trauma.”
