BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood emotional as she recalls horrific bike accident

BBC weather lady Carol Kirkwood gave an emotional update on her knee injury after she was accidentally hit by a car last year.

Carol, 59, struggled to hold back her tears when she provided her colleague Louise Minchin and Annie Emmerson with details on her wound.

Since the incident took place, the meteorologist admitted that she hasn’t been able to get back on her bike just yet and said she still has dreams about the accident.

Speaking candidly on Louise and Annie’s Her Spirit podcast, Carol spoke about the calamity and her current exercise routine.

She explained: “Because I’ve damaged my knee and my thumb, I haven’t got back into running but I speed walk and that’s my exercise.

“I go for it, probably faster than when I was running!”

The forecaster then spoke about how she misses riding her bike. She continued: “I hope one day to get back on my bike.”

Louise chimed: “You had a really horrid accident. And if you hadn’t of had your helmet on, then things could have ended differently.”

Breathing a sigh of relief, Carol replied: “If I hadn’t of had my helmet on, I would have face planted!

“I have a huge nose as you can see, so my nose hit the deck and had a lovely black bruise on it, but my helmet had a peak at the front and that’s what stopped my face from hitting the ground.”

Talking more about the accident and recounting her painful ordeal, Carol went on: “I won’t ever forget that accident, it was horrific.

“My knee was absolutely battered and there were nerves hanging out of it! It was down to my knee cap!”

“Fortunately my knee cap was OK and I had bruises all over my body but you get over that kind of thing,” she said bravely.

“But sometimes I’ll dream about it and still hear that [noise] of the car hitting the back of my bike…”

Carol then began to tear up and said: “Oh my goodness, I can’t really talk about it..”

Realising she was still very triggered by the accident, hosts Louise and Annie intervened and told her not to continue.

Carol is the main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast and has worked for broadcaster for a number of years.

In August 2015, she took part in the thirteenth series of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
