BBC Time fans 'can't watch' 'brutal' prison violence scene as Mark is attacked

Fans of BBC prison mini-series Time were left hiding behind their hands on Sunday night during one particularly “brutal” scene.

As Sean Bean’s character Mark was back in his cell, he was accosted by a group of prisoners – with the leader, Johnno, brandishing a water bottle full of turps.

He forced Mark to smell the offending liquid before proceeding to pour it all over Mark’s bare feet.

“What’s the last thing you want to happen when you’ve got turps all over your feet?” Johnno asked, with a lighter in hand.

Mark, meanwhile, could be heard begging for the gang to stop from where he’d been forced to lie back on the floor.

“I’m gonna set your feet on fire, lad,” the offender spat in Mark’s face, before asking: “Which one should I do first, the left or the right?”

Thankfully, the gang were interrupted before they could do any real damage, but not before viewers had admitted they “couldn’t watch” the “brutal” scene.

“My god this is f***ing terrifying,” one anxious viewer posted to Twitter, as another echoed: “Savage Sunday night viewing.”

And someone else agreed: “Holy sh** these lads are brutal. Turps on the feet. Good grief!”

“Jesus, Time is too tense for a Sunday night,” someone else penned, while a fifth viewer said: “The stress of that last 60 seconds!”

Later, Mark approached fellow prisoner Jackson Jones for advice – and training – to help defeat bully Johnno.

But Jackson made it clear his assistance would come at a price, and Mark would owe him a favour in future.

“I’ll be entitled to ask you for something in return, right?” Jackson pressed, before giving Mark some much-needed advice. “He’s a bully – Johnno. All you need to do is hurt him once and he’ll stop.”

He added: “I’ll make sure none of his scummy wee pals jump in either, all right?”

“I’m no Goliath, look at me,” Jackson said. “But I’d do some damage.”

After a brief training sequence, with Mark learning how to punch against Jackson’s flat palms, it looked like he’d be successful in heading off the attacks if they resumed in future.
