It’s been months since Coronation Street viewers have seen Jenny and Johnny Connor together as husband and wife on the cobbles – but that could all change soon.
As super soap week approaches, Jenny actress Sally Ann Matthews has dropped a huge hint that their flame could be rekindled as a huge storm overtakes Weatherfield and the Platts’ sinkhole opens up further, leaving death and destruction in its wake.
It comes just after Jenny’s romance with toy-boy Leo got underway, after months of Jenny being alone after cheating on Johnny with Ronnie while her husband was behind bars.
Upon Johnny’s release, he found out about the affair and dumped Jenny – despite originally begging her to move on while he was in prison.
And in the explosive stunt week, Jenny finds herself trapped in the sinkhole after going to search for Leo – with no way out.
Thankfully, Johnny soon turns up to play the hero and help her escape.
But will the pair get out alive, or could they meet their tragic end underneath the cobbles?
Speaking to Daily Star and other publications, Sally Ann explained of their relationship: “Ultimately Jenny loves Johnny. I don’t think finding another partner is on her radar – she has a really lovely friendship with Johnny at the minute, and he’s been the one who is saying, ‘Go out there and move on, live your life!’
“I think, if life hadn’t got in the way and caused all these upsets, that Jenny and Johnny would still be together.
“But I think they just thought that they’re a bit toxic together. And even though they love each other, they actually can’t be together and make each other happy – but who knows?” she teased.
Speaking of the role Johnny plays in Jenny’s life now, Sally Ann explained: “I think Jenny feels that Johnny will always be a big part of her life, and because they do love each other there’s no animosity there.
“They’ve been really grown up about it, and they’ve supported each other through it, and she still really cares for him and cares for his physical wellbeing with his MS, and wants to encourage him to find a new path in life.
“And she wants to make the little flat that he’s renting nice and homely. So I think she thinks they’re quite ‘together’ – just not in a romantic sense.”
However, when Johnny reveals that he’s planning to leave Weatherfield altogether and head for pastures new, Jenny is left “devastated”.
He initially got a job at the factory working with Carla – but overheard the Underworld workers theorising he only got the contractor job because he’s family.
Sally Ann added: “Jenny thought [she and Johnny] were friends, that they could tell each other everything.
“Johnny was the one originally who told her to go for it with Ronnie, so she thinks that he’s fine with her moving on with her life.
“She thinks they’re great friends and will always be in each other’s lives, so when she finds out that he wants to move away she’s devastated – not only for her, but she thought they were on the same page and maybe they’re not.”
The sinkhole drama, however, forces the husband and wife duo to finally confront the feelings they’d been suppressing.
Sally Ann said: “Jenny is terrified, she’s injured, she’s cold. But I think she has this overwhelming sense that, ‘Someone’s going to come and rescue me!’
“She knows that Leo is on the case, and that people know there’s an issue, so I think she’s quietly confident initially that she’s gonna be found.”
She went on: “When Johnny arrives, she’s just like, ‘What the hell are you doing here, what are you playing at being a hero?’
“But then they’re forced to discuss how they feel. I think when you’re in a situation like that, you have to work together.
“You have to either come up a way of how you can get yourselves out of it, and if you exhaust that avenue then you’ve got to keep each other’s spirits up until you’re rescued – and within that inevitably one would be the one who’s flagging a bit and the other will be bolstering the other one up.”
Sally Ann concluded: “And within those conversations maybe things are said and real feelings are exposed.”
And what of poor Leo in all this? Sally Ann just quipped: “Plenty of other fish in the sinkhole!”
But whether their new romance will be allowed to blossom or not, only one thing is for certain – no character is safe.
It comes as Corrie producer Iain MacLeod promised Daily Star: “We have a big stunt planned that will centre around the sinkhole in the Platt family’s back garden. And that will result in a death.
“Deaths only really work if it’s somebody that you really care about and it’s going to be somebody that viewers know and love.”
Filming the water stunts was certainly an ordeal, as Sally Ann explained: “We were in the water for six days. We had wetsuits on and then clothes on top – it was such a monumental effort getting to a loo, that by the time we got to day three everybody who was in the pool with us was a lot more familiar with each other, let’s say that.
“It was cold, but because of the environment of that studio, the people who weren’t in the water were wilting.
“They were absolutely sweating buckets because it’s like when you’re at a swimming pool, you’ve got that really hot, humid environment.”
