Mad About You star Cynthia Harris has sadly died aged 87, her family have confirmed.
The star was best known for her role in the hit NBC sitcom, in which she portrayed Paul Reiser’s mother.
But she also starred in plenty of Broadway plays, including The Best Laid Plans, Company and The White House Murder Case.
The star passed away on October 3 in Greenwich Village, New York City, with her family announcing the news on Wednesday (October 6).
Her cause of death has not yet been announced, but her family released a poignant obituary on Wednesday.
It read: “Harris, Cynthia Lee, passed away on October 3, 2021. She was an actor well known for her many roles on stage, screen and television.
“In addition to having devoted her life to the theatre she was active in many philanthropic causes.
“Cynthia is survived by her loving partner Nathan Silverstein, her devoted assistant Terrence Mintern, her brother Dr. Matthew Harris (Frances), her sister-in-law Maryjane Harris (brother David predeceased her) and many nieces and nephews.
“Cynthia’s passing is a great loss for the dramatic arts and for all of us.”
The actress is survived by her partner Nathan Silverstein.
Fans have already been swarming social media to pay their own tributes to the late star, with one tweeting: “Cynthia Harris was the best of New York.
“The type of New Yorkers we’re indebted to for the unique colour and perspective they bring that’s distinctly New York for the rest of us to enjoy.
“And the absolute magic of a traditional New York Jewish mother. May her memory be a blessing.”
Another followed up: “RIP wonderful actress #CynthiaHarris who was so funny and terrific as @PaulReiser mom on Mad About You. She passed away today at age 87.”
“RIP wonderful Cynthia Harris. Brave and strong in life and in front of the camera. So talented. Whatever you wrote, she said it just the way you heard it in your head, only better,” someone else posted.
As well as her role on Mad About You, Cynthia was also hailed for her performance in TV mini-series Edward & Mrs Simpson, released in 1978 – a role for which she received a BAFTA nomination.
More recently, she even lent her voice to a video game franchise – portraying background voices in Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V.
The actress also appeared in shows like Law & Order, Murder She Wrote and the hit film Three Men and a Baby alongside Tom Selleck.
Along with her prolific acting career, Cynthia co-founded the Actors Company Theatre in 1993, and acted as one of its co-artistic directors.
