Dan Walker walks off BBC Breakfast as Louise Minchin forced to host alone on last day

Louise Minchin was left gobsmacked on her final day at BBC Breakfast when her co-star Dan Walker walked off of the set during their final broadcast as a pair.

The beloved host first announced she was to be leaving Breakfast earlier this year, after she first joined the show all the way back in 2001.

Wednesday’s show marked presenter Louise’s final day hosting the flagship breakfast show, and it was a day packed full of surprises.

At one point, Louise’s co-star Dan announced that he was walking out of the studio, leaving Louise sitting on the red sofa looking shocked as she had to read the rest of the auto-cue all on her own.

Revealing that his co-anchor was in for a big treat, Dan told Louise: “You just have to relax and enjoy. I’m gonna go and you need to read this last bit.

Louise replied: “You’re gonna go? I don’t like being left!”

An excited Dan went on: “This will be the last time you’re actually on this sofa, okay? So I’m just going to pop off and when you’ve finished, you need to come with me,”, hinting that she was about to leave the studio soon after him.

Louise was visibly confused as Dan stood up to leave, saying: “How will I know where I’m going, Dan?”

Dan then walked away from the cameras, leaving Louise to finish reading the last of the auto-cue.

She said: “Hold on everybody, keep on watching. I have no idea what’s going to happen,”

After she finished reading, Louise had to be blindfolded as she was escorted by Dan outside of the studio where she was welcomed by a raving farewell party in the Salford studio garden.

Louise took off her blindfold to find a brass band playing live music and a wave of her BBC colleagues cheering as they wore masks of Louise’s face on it.

The presenter got emotional as she was shown a touching montage of her best BBC moments from over the years before being given a gorgeous cake.

Before her farewell party, Louise was fighting back tears as she received a flood of sweet messages from her adoring fans who told her how much they meant to her.

She said: “There’s so many things to say, but first of all it’s the people, it’s the people who watch, thank you all so much for your huge support, particularly over the last two years, it’s been really tough and I’ve felt we’re all part of a story together, a shared history and it’s been amazing to be here.

“There are so many messages and I’m kind of embarrassed and humbled and tearful when I read them, but there’s that sense that some people have literally grown up watching me and I feel really privileged to have been in that position and to have worked here all those years.”

“There have been tough days and tough stories, but it’s been amazing and I’m really genuinely touched by all those things people have said and it’s a bit embarrassing.”

BBC Breakfast airs every day at 6am on BBC One.
