Former Love Island star Dr Alex George 'needs break' from coronavirus frontline

Dr Alex George is to take a break from working on the coronavirus frontline – to save his mental health.

The former Love Island star has been helping to battle COVID-19 and treat patients as an A&E doctor at Lewisham and Greenwich Hospital in South London.

He also suffered the loss of his younger brother, Llyr, in July last year.

He has now revealed that he is in need of a break for his own mental health and wellbeing after the stressful year.

Taking to his Instagram, Alex told his followers: “It’s been a bit of an up and down week. I always want to be honest with you guys and the last thing I want is for my page to be a highlight of good days, hiding the bad.

“It’s been a long and hard year, which ultimately takes its toll.

“I have really felt it this week and I am aware I need a break. I am taking a full week off from Tuesday.

“Recognising when you are becoming stressed and acting on it, is so important.

He continued: “There are good times on the horizon as well as things I want to achieve, most importantly in my role but also in my personal life and with my new brand (which I am rather proud of).

“To be able to do this I need to look after my physical and mental health. Never be ashamed to take a break, when you need it. I believe it’s a sign of self awareness and ultimately strength. Happy Sunday everyone and remember to be kind to yourself.”

He added that he hoped his public announcement helped others in need of a break and that there was “no shame” in admitting it.

The reality TV star has received praise from fans for pushing for the prioritisation of mental health during the pandemic.

Earlier this month he met with Boris Johnson to help push for the approval of the addition of a whopping £79 million towards youth mental health.

Announcing the news, Dr Alex posted a picture of his meeting with the Prime Minister to his Instagram, captioning it: “This is a huge moment!! I am so pleased to announce that the Government has approved £79 million for youth mental health!
