Helen Mirren unrecognisable in on-set snaps as Israeli prime minister Golda Meir

Helen Mirren wasn’t even recognisable in pictures that emerged of her on set playing Israeli prime minister, Golda Meir.

The 76-year-old award-winning actress boasted crimped grey hair that was loosely tied in a low ponytail while she chuffed away on a burning cigarette.

She wore heavy makeup which included thick ruffed up dark eyebrow and olive tanned skin.

In one picture, the Hollywood star bore a striking resemblance to her character as she leaned over a balcony while wearing a button-down shirt sleeve dress.

The biopic film is based on the Ticking-Clock thriller that follows the struggles that Golda Meir faced as a female in government – against the all-male cabinet during the Yom Kippur War.

Meir is already set to be a hit with Oscar-winning Israeli director Guy Nattiv at the helm.

The behind-the-scenes footage lands after it was announced earlier in the month that Helen had been cast as the formidable political figure.

Speaking about her role, Helen said: “Golda Meir was a formidable, intransigent and powerful leader.

“It is a great challenge to portray her at the most difficult moment of her extraordinary life. I only hope I do her justice!”

Guy Nattiv was also quick to praise Helen for her acting talents, he added: “I have long been an admirer of the great Helen Mirren.

“She has melted so brilliantly into Golda Meir’s character with incredible talent, intelligence, depth and emotion, doing justice to the richness and complexity of this incredible woman.”

The political picture with also include a star studded cast Ellie Piercy who is better known for her role in Black Mirror, Rami Heuberger from Schlinder’s List and French actress Camille Cottin, from Call My Agent.

On October 6 1973, the Arab coalition jointly led by Egypt and Syria who launched a surprise attack against Israel on the holiest day of the year – the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

The Yom Kippur war is also known to many as the Ramadan or October war.

At the time, Golda had been in power as Prime Minister of the country and was slammed for how she’d prepared for war – and later stepped down from her post a year later.

In 1978, just four years later the historic figure died at the age of 80, following a battle with cancer.
